Technology abounds throughout the new Mustang with popular items such as Ford’s famous voice –activated SYNC system. There’s also Sirius Satellite Radio available, and if you step up to the plate and go for the Next-Gen Navigation package, then prepare yourself to be truly wowed. The super-large and incredibly clear display unit features a rear-back-up camera and the same speech-recognition setup as the SYNC system. It also offers Route Guidance which actually reads out loud the names of upcoming streets for you. There’s also nearly 10 Gigabytes of storage space included with that, which, through its Jukebox function, should supply you ample road music to get you anywhere.

Of course, that’s if you actually care where you’re going, or for that matter, are crazy enough to want to listen to music rather than the exhaust note of the car.

The new 2010 Mustang hasn’t lost its grunt and growl, that’s for sure. In fact, the exhaust note on the 4.6L SOHC V8 model (Now 315hp) is one of the sweetest I’ve experienced for quite a while, and remember, I drive a lot of cars.

Ford says that they’ve fine-tuned such things as the shock absorbers, the spring setup, and the stabilizer bars. They also reckon that the drag coefficient has been lowered on the GT and V6 models, which has increased downforce on both. All this sounds delightful to me, but at the end of the day, what does it actually mean? Well, you can take it from me, the new Mustang handles better than its predecessors. In fact, let’s alter that to read, much much better. The ride is still on the firm side, but would you honestly want anything else on a retro muscle car? The big difference is probably noticed mostly in one of two areas, the long-distance drive comfort, and maybe more importantly, the vehicle’s handling of corners. The new Mustang behaves considerably better now when one decides to make like Steve McQueen and do a quick right-hand exit from the traffic lights. The drama of the wheel hop boogie is no longer as noticeable, yet the improved traction pleasantly is. Now I’m not going to tell you that I haven’t driven better setup cars, but from a price point ($36,999 for the base GT - $43,299 as tested) and sheer enjoyment factor, its right up there with the best.

Ford seems to be pushing a lot of the right buttons with its products nowadays and the new Mustang demonstrates that rather well.

Is it perfect? Err, maybe not, because there’s still one or two things which I’d like to see, number one being a 6-speed gearbox. I also couldn’t live with the crazy optional glass panel roof which was fitted to my test vehicle (A $2,200 option). Honestly, for the life of me I just don’t get this idea. Place one slightly overweight and balding journo under a vast area of non-opening glass, and cook gradually until he resembles George Hamilton. Listen to me for a minute Ford...If I’m a sun lover (which I am), I either want a fully functioning sunroof that I can open up and enjoy the fresh air, or I want to purchase the convertible model. Yes, I know that there’s a nifty little cover which semi-blocks the sun’s delightful rays, but isn’t that rather defeating the purpose? In fact, even with the shade in place, it was still so hot that I had to turn on the air conditioner and that upsets my tree-hugging buddies even more than the honking great V8 under the hood. OK, fair enough, you caught me out on that one as I don’t have any eco-friends, but you get the idea.

Seriously though, I did truthfully enjoy my week in the new 2010 Mustang GT, and I could possibly envisage myself owning one someday in the future. It would have to be the convertible model, if I’m brutally honest, and the GT model for certain because I couldn’t live without that awesome exhaust note, but yes, it’s my kind of automobile.

Of course, being able to say that I owned the best named vehicle in automotive history would be pretty neat too!!!
